Handheld Fruit Pies

Handheld Fruit Pies

These Handheld Fruit Pies are inspired by classic fried and baked fruit pies—flaky, golden, and filled with rich Sweet Home Fruit Butters. Perfect for desserts, brunch, or party trays, this versatile recipe works with apple, pumpkin, peach, sweet potato, or cherry apple bourbon butter, plus optional mix-ins for a Southern twist.

Chill Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20–25 minutes
Total Time: About 1 hour 30 minutes

  • Zest of ½ lemon or orange

For Assembly

  • 1 egg, beaten (egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
  • Neutral oil (if frying)

Instructions

Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together.
  4. Divide dough into two discs, wrap tightly, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Filling

  1. In a bowl, stir together the fruit butter and any optional add-ins until well combined.
  2. Taste and adjust spices if desired. The filling should be thick and spoonable.

Assemble the Handheld Pies

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (if baking).
  2. Roll out chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about ⅛-inch thickness.
  3. Cut into rectangles or circles (about 4–5 inches).
  4. Spoon 2–3 tablespoons of filling onto one side of each piece, leaving a border.
  5. Brush edges lightly with egg wash, fold dough over filling, and crimp edges with a fork.
  6. Brush tops with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Cut a small vent in the top of each pie.

Bake or Fry

To Bake:

  1. Place pies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.

To Fry:

  1. Heat oil to 350°F.
  2. Fry pies in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until deep golden.
  3. Drain on paper towels.
