Jennifer Harwell
Jennifer Harwell spent the first part of her life as a nurse, but to Birmingham — and to thousands of people around the world — she will always be remembered as an artist of extraordinary heart. She began painting in 2004 at age 49, discovering a gift that seemed to arrive all at once. What started with rocks and stepping stones quickly grew into animals on doors, murals, and eventually the inspired angel paintings that became her signature.
“She became known as the angel lady,” Donny Harwell recalls. “She would dream angels, then wake up and go straight to the canvas. Each one had a name. Each one had a purpose.” Many who saw them were moved to tears, believing the paintings were meant specifically for them. Jennifer felt the same — that every angel found the person it was created for.
Her passion was unstoppable. She painted morning, noon, and night, creating more than 1,000 works in just nine years. She opened her first gallery in Homewood in 2007, teaching more than 5,000 students and launching the careers of many Birmingham artists. With the blinds open and her palette knife in hand, she invited the community to watch creativity unfold.
Jennifer’s generosity matched her talent. She donated countless pieces to ministries, charities, and Camp Smile-A-Mile fundraisers long before she ever knew she would face cancer herself. Even during treatment, she continued to paint with courage and grace.
She passed away on August 4, 2013, at age 57, leaving behind a legacy of color, kindness, and faith. Born in Iowa, raised in Oregon, and beloved in Birmingham, Jennifer touched thousands with her spirit.
“She loved the Lord with all her heart,” Donny says. “She reached out and touched people with her kindness. When I think of her now, I can’t help but think of angels.”
